Beyond: Part 2

A while back I created a piece called beyond in which I somewhat questioned the importance of time within composition:

The piece was recorded in one take and was simply an improvised guitar track which was then heavily processed. Beyond: Part 2 follows all of the same characteristics but I also manipulated playback speed in this new piece To create a truly extended form composition.

The original recording for the piece was a Little over 21 minutes in length and was done via DI (Direct Inject) from my classical guitar which has a “Stage Pro Anthem” Mic inside giving a high quality recording without the need of using an external mic – very useful for home recording. I played largely around the key of Em but did modulate briefly to Am, G and C along with including some Dorian and Phrygian inflections. This is because I knew that once the track was duplicated and time stretched there would need to be a large amount of consonance for the piece to be enjoyable but at the same time brief modulations would create moments of polytonality. The overall result is a consistently changing harmony of polychords.

All of the time stretching was done by multiples of 2, resulting in one of the duplicate tracks being half as long and an octave higher and the other twice as long and an octave lower. Every combination of these is heard along with each individually, The piece climaxes with all three heard together along with one extra track with is twice as long and 2 octaves lower, This I did a pitch shift on without effecting the time, If heard by itself this track would have a weird sound to it but within the mix of the other 3 tracks it just fills out the low end without much musical influence. All of the track were heavily processed with layered convolution reverbs remove any sense of attack characteristic from the original instrument to the point of it sounding somewhat like a synth track.
