The origin of Dylan JD Music’s practice was as a partially self taught hobbyist guitar player. Electing to study music at GCSE level at Hautlieu school led to Dylan being captivated with the subject and taking the art seriously. A great deal of credit is to be given to Dylan’s Tutor: Rachel Sinfield who opened Dylan’s imagination to a wider palate of musical traditions, repertoire, knowledge. Dylan’s academic study of music continued to GCE level alongside a practical study of the guitar through private tuition. This period of Dylan’s skill development saw Dylan take a particular interest to musical composition, achieving highly in this aspect of coursework. By the time Dylan had completed his GCE level study, Dylan had got a taste for film composition by collaborating with media students, accompanying performance by frequently playing the support part for musical performance assessments and solo performance by performing at the leaving and award ceremony for the most prestigious school on the island.
The beginning of Dylan’s undergraduate study at Falmouth University demanded the diversification of Dylan’s skills, leading to Dylan becoming established in violin performance, production an array of new compositional approaches. Over the course of the first two and a half years of Dylan’s study he gained experience in playing in various musical ensembles including an improvisation focused ensemble, folk music groups and Contemporary Classical ensembles including a tour with friend and fellow artist Emilio Ayto and performing as 1st violin in a new music group. In this time Dylan would collaborate with a number of artists to release experimental progressive rock pieces. Dylan also gained experience writing music for video games, working closely with the lead development team on a community developed game, got an opportunity to work as a stage hand and events assistant at a concert by the band “Passenger” at Fort Regent in St. Helier Jersey. Dylan’s accademic study of music also continues, having achieved a 1:1 for dissertation in the first half of his undergraduate study.
Dylan continues to grow his discography, repertoire and portfolio as he approaches the end of his undergraduate study of music, always innovating his own practice.
